My SUV is 16 years old and still running fine. However, the treads on my tires are at the end of the line. I'm wondering if I should buy new tires. Is it worth buying new tires for a 16 year old car?
The thing is I haven't driven that much in the last few years. I have about 162,000 km on my SUV, so it's more like a 12 year old car.
I hear quotes of 4 tires going for between $250 to $600 to $1500. So what price would you pay for 4 tires? _________________ Well, once we had an easy ride and always felt the same

I have a Toyota Rav 4 and new tyres for me would cost about 50 quid each, or about 80 of your dollars so about 320 dollars for all 4. But I could get remoulds a lot cheaper but the speed rating wouldnt be the same so I wouldnt ever buy the cheap ones.
Well, if your SUV is still running fine and there are no major problems other than the tires I would buy a good set. It seems your vehicle has been a reliable car and you must do regular maintenance for it to have lasted this long. And lets face it $600.00 is a lot cheaper that what you would pay for another vehicle even if it was used. So I would go with the middle class tires if it were me.
If it were me, I would be going for mid range tires as well, but I would also maybe go to a breakers yard and see if I could get hardly worn tires at a bit of a knock down price.
Cars are my living and I am a regular visitor to breakers yards and I quite often get reallly good tires for next to nothing, maybe 10 per cent of the price of a new set, and as you know that means a considerable saving in any language
Is a breakers yard the same thing as a junk yard? I used to date a mechanic and I know he did the same thing. He bought a lot of used parts of the junk yard that were still in great condition and always got a good deal on these parts.
Yes, it can also be called a Scrappy, lol. Cars which have had a bad crash are great cars for getting parts from, because although the body work might be dented, although the wind screens might be smashed, the parts on these cars are always tip top and really cheap.
Things like brake pads, exhaust pipes, batteries, tyres and a whole host of other bits are normally obtained about 10 per cent of the price of the same part new
I get fuel filters for less than a quid, clean them up and use them as I need them for peoples cars, never ever had a car comer back because a second hand part from a scrapped car was dodgy
It helps me keep peoples bills down as well which is why I am popular
Spark plugs are my favorite, I can wip 20 sets off plugs from cars in minutes
Those are very good ideas. I think I will check out some of these junk/scrap yards for parts. I know someone who just bought a 93 Toyota truck for $400 that had rolled over on the highway but he's going to fix it up and probably could sell it for $1500.
Anyhow, I was checking prices for the tires and the one place said they don't even carry such tires for my SUV. The guy there said he's been looking for the same for his mother and he can't find them anywhere.
My feeling about the weather here is that it won't be as bad as last year given it's an El Nino year and the Winter Olympics are here. I'm sure there'll be no snow for the Olympics. _________________ Well, once we had an easy ride and always felt the same

One of the joys of owning a 4x4 and one that does get used off road and not just for mounting the kerbs in town, the cost of tires are not cheap. A friend of mine who owns the same truck has just bought some new ones and it worked out cheaper to buy a wheel and tire package than it did for 4 tires and he got a slightly better tire than the one he was looking at.
I am doing a bit charity event next year and tires are something im looking at sorting out some time in the new year, not looking forward to the cost anything from £90 - £150 per tire and as im going to be away from home ill need 5 to keep the spare the same
On the plus side I love my truck and I can get nearly double the mileage out of a set of tires on the truck than I can get on a normal car so I guess in the grand scheme of things it all levels out to cost me the same just more less often
If your vehicle is in good shape other than needing good tires then I would definitely go for the new tires. At the end of the day you need good tires for safe driving. Consider the safety of your yourself and your passengers as well as the safety of others on the road. Having good treads on your tires is crucial for stopping safely. Especially in bad weather.
Here in the UK if you get stopped by the cops and the tread on your tires is a bit below the legal limit they charge you, and you get a fine and points on your license, so its really not worth not having good tires with lots of tread.

why not you knwo the most importatn part of your car is its tyres because they are in friction with the roads. so why not spend some good mone on them when you should. other reason is that buy ing cheap tyres will be like being cheap yourself and in some near future you can need to buy new tyres very soon.
