I made a jumper last year for my 6 year-old as I had some leftover wool from when I was pregnant (I got an urge to start making baby clothes then!); it's in her favorite colour (red) and when I was making it she kept asking me when it would be finished (she thought it was something I could do in 10 mins or something).
After I made it she wouldn't wear it because she said it was too scratchy so it's been left at the bottom of a drawer for about 6 months. I like knitting; now I know the way my grandmother used to feel when we wouldn't wear the clothes she used to make for us! |

| I love to knit. I learned from my mother and now I am teaching my granddaughter. Growing up we always had knitted sweaters and we didn't dare refuse to wear them. I have a knitted coat that my mother made me probably 20 years ago and it is still in good shape. I wear it every winter. |

I love the idea of being able to make something from my 2 hands (and needles) but usually the result does not exactly look like what I had in mind!
I think I will try and knit clothes for my kid's dolls, pencil cases, stuff like that before throwing myself in some big piece of work next time! |

I found a great pattern online last year for a woman's jumper but when I tried to order the wool, it was all out of stock!
Wool is so expensive anyway, I don't realy know if it's worth knitting anymore.
I wonder if anyone knows of any online store that sell wool that's not too expensive (and that can be delivered in Europe)? |

Hi,
I knit fancy scarves on occasion just to keep in practice.
I have been crocheting since I was 8. I crochet garments, accessories and holiday goodies. When I have time I crochet on consignment.
I taught knitting and crocheting at a local library for 2 years, it was interesting to see the strict alliances to either craft, with only a few students willing to do both. The age range of my 20 students ranged from 12 to 64!!!
Although knitted garments have better drape than crocheted ones, crocheting is easier to travel with, as 1 hook is less threatening and safer than 2 pointed needles. Dropping a stitch in knitting can be the end of the world depending on the pattern, with crocheting, usually only 1 stitch is on the hook at one time.
I knit and crochet with cotton, acrylic/wool blends and nylon. Pure wool is indeed too scratchy!!
Young people need hobbies and a sense of being able to produce something with their hands (besides a video game high score!!)
Keep needle craft alive - both knitting and crocheting!!
Later,
Cecily |

| I am currently knitting a fancy sweater for my niece for Christmas. I love the finished look a project has and it's cool watching them take form. I crochet and cross stitch as well. I hate the fact that knitting and crocheting have seemed to fade out in the past few years. I keep trying to get some of my friends and family members to give it a go. It is one hobby I would hate to see die out!!! |

It seems like this is one thing that has been around for years. Luckily everyone in my family either knit, crocheted or embroidered. So I learned how to do all of that stuff. I also taught myself how to do needlepoint and many other things. But crafts seem to be dying out. I however am still determined to show the world that hand made goods way out last the store bought junk. Plus its a great way to learn something new, and to keep ourselves busy and out of trouble. _________________ When in doubt let a man do it. |

I know how to knit using a single tool for knitting. I don't know how to knit using two sticks. <- don't know what they are called. |

| I was never much of a knitter but I did crochet quite a bit years ago. Whenever I would attempt to knit and dropped a stitch I would always have to rip it out to that point. It was so frustrating for me, but then again I was never taught properly. Now crocheting came easy to me for some reason and I made many an afghan in the past. |

Oh Jimbo you do make me laugh. Well I think I would have locked it but as you haven't..... I will join in, let's see now that it has been dragged up, let's see if anyone else dains to answer it.
I as a young girl was fascinated by knitting. Some of the women I used to watch, were incredibly fast, and you could hear the click, click of the needles, it was always to the same beat and it would mesmorise me but better still at the end there was a product that could be used! I did try but I used to pull to much on the wool and so it would come out completely uneven. I have to say that after a couple of attempts I gave up. My mother didn't know how to knit so she couldn't help me. I believe that if she could have, I would still be knitting today. However, one thing she could do and well, was sew, so I learnt to do that, and thank goodness as I use this skill quite a lot to darn, mend, put buttons back on etc. Very useful skill to have. _________________ Early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese! |
