As to fruits I think it still Ok as long as they are not rotten. But with can foods/process foods I am very particulate with their dates. When I buy them at grocery i make it sure to see the label of expiry date and when it is almost, say one week before the expiry I do not buy them. It's good to be safe and not suffer our health because the cost of being sick nowadays is very high.
Well, I was going to lock this post because of its age, but I wanted to add that most foods are ok for a wee while after the expiry date. We get food from a pal of mine who works in a store and we get it for free on its expiry date. We have been eating it for months and have never got sick at all, and better still, some of it can be frozen and used at a later date. Eggs are a good example of a food lasting long after its expiry date. I boiled up some the other day that were 3 weeks over the date on the pack and they were fine. I wonder how society in general never got sick before these dates started appearing on the packs of food we buy and eat.
definitely no. my husband is very particular when it comes to expiration of dates on the foods that we have at home and the foods that we bought from the groceries. some may really lead to food poisoning which is bad for our health.
janyen, when I was a lad back in the 1960,s there wasnt any such thing as expiry dates on food. We used our common sense. None of us died, or were harmed. This is an area where I have some expertise. The dates on these packs are guidelines. It migfht be that they say best before, they dont say poisonous after, do they?
It depends on the food, if bread is a day or 2 out of date but I cannot see any mold on it, than I will more likely than not eat it. The same goes for milk, if it smells ok but out of date recently, I will still drink it.

It depends on how out-of-date it is, I suppose, and what it is. I'll usually eat non-perishable foods (dry, cupboard foods) after the expiration date, just because there's not a huge difference. I won't touch dairy products, fruit, veggies, bread, or any other kind of food after it's expiration date, though. *shrugs*.
unless it's green when it should be green, or furry or misshapen or stinky or in a can that's about to explode, i'll eat it. _________________ roar like sushi! o0o0o0o0o0o ...
These stupid dates are just another daft example of how we have all become unable to judge for our selves if something is ok to eat or not. Generations of people from the start of time did ok without these dates. They are a guide, best before, but not going to kill you after, and if you freeze something on the day it expires its fine for months. Did you know that milk can even be frozen and used months afterwards.
These dates have created a waste mountain. Shops never threw away food like they do now back in the 60,s and 70,s and even the 80,s. Its daft, and methinks its all been a ploy which has aided the supermarket cartels to make even more money out of us.

hi jimbo, sorry for the delayed response.
it happened in the Philippines and was televised in the t.v coz of food poisoning. the reason was they children ate an expired food. i think that was corned beef or anything that was preserved in can. some died with that tragedy.
i think before in 60's time, there aren't a lot of chemicals mixed up with our foods. but now it's really different. milk from i think asia was that and a chocolate also. but that was not because of out of dates or expired at all.
Dont get me wrong, here in the UK we had a lot of pensioners die because of food poisoning to, but it wasnt cos it was out of date, it was coz it was contaminated. Corned Beef is good for years in tins, it always has been and when I was in the store the other night, I saw some stuff on the shelf with a use by date of 2013
i think eating fruits which are already out of dat is not very risky or dangerous. But i won't really try it to canned foods or chips that are out of date because i believe when they are out of date it undergo some chmical reactions and it might make me sick or poison me.
oh i am always afraid to eat food after the expiration date. my stomach is not that strong when it comes to spoiled or rotten food. so in the house we always make sure to eat canned goods before its expiration date.
I do it with fruits and vegetables but it all depends still with the physical aspects, if it still really palatable. i also ate pre heated foods, a one day old meal as long as its not yet spoiled. _________________ Life is a Highway, I wanna ride it all night long..
I have guidelines as to what I do eat and how long out of date it is. Generally it's a common sense rule. If I can get rid of the bad parts of the food, I do, If I can't it's in the garbage. If nothing is growing inside of it, if no smell is alarming, or no texture, or color is different, it's ate. If it's smushy and soggy, bye bye or to the doggy!
I never eat any kind of food if they are out of date wheather they are packed or not packed but i noticed many person they consume packed chips after expiry date also as shopkeeper offers them great discount then also i donot consume them as for little money i donot want to harm my body _________________ SIX DOLLAR MAGIC IN IT!!!
